Tuesday Ten: The Benefits of Your Favorite Spices

2. Turmeric

turmeric

A spice in yellow-orange color with the same spiciness of a ginger but minus the sweetness. Turmeric can be found in almost every kitchen around the world but is commonly used in Indian dishes. It gives an extra punch of flavor to your egg dishes, meat dishes, sauces, soups and baked foods. In the US, it is commonly used as a medicinal herb because of its anti-inflammatory property. An active ingredient ‘curcumin’ found in turmeric is said to have antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial and anticancer properties. These properties are known to prevent or help in malignant and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease.
