Slippery Elm
The primary use of slippery elm is for soothing inflamed gut, particularly in cases like irritable bowel syndrome and colitis. It is also similar to other bowel conditions such as diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Slippery elm owes its colon cleansing ability for its rich mucilage content. It is responsible for the herb’s effectiveness in soothing and healing the colon. Many herbal books refer slippery elm as an emollient agent or demulcent.
How to Use It?
Slippery elm is often cut into small strips or powdered for tea. As a demulcent, it is best taken when soaked in cold water for long. Or, stir 2 to 3 tablespoons of powdered slippery elm into fruit juice, oatmeal and other foods.
