Honey is known to have antimicrobial properties. Applying raw honey on infected wounds will not only lessen the redness and swelling but also the healing time. It is also proven to treat conjunctivitis, an infection of the eye. It reduces the healing time, swelling and discharge of pus. Its effects can be compared to that of antibiotics.
Peter Charles Molan from the University of Waikato in New Zealand found out that raw honey aids in faster healing of infected wounds because it reacts with the body’s fluids to form hydrogen peroxide, creating a hostile environment for bacteria.
